Earle BuildingConstructed in 1895 by William H. Earle, this prominent downtown landmark was altered and eventually neglected, resulting in severe deterioration, which obscured its original appearance. The building was purchased in 1999 by the Rhode Island Housing & Mortgage Finance Corporation who hired the architectural firm, Durkee, Brown, Viveiros and Werenfels. The rehabilitation and reuse of the building helps to preserve an important piece of the city's urban fabric as well as advance revitalization efforts in the downtown area.

On Saturday, December 6th, the PPS Downtown Holiday Festival showcased 11 stunning lofts, located in six historic buildings that have undergone dramatic restorations! These private residences were open to the public from 11A.M. – 4 P.M.
Providence is nationally recognized for having one of the most intact and historically significant, nineteenth century downtowns in the nation. Over the last several years, the Downtown has been in the midst of an incredible transformation with the conversion of former department stores and commercial buildings into dynamic living spaces. Tour goers experienced award winning restorations, visually stunning architectural details and breathtaking views of the magnificent Providence skyline. PPS, in cooperation with the Providence Foundation, Providence/Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Downtown Merchants Association and Shop Downcity, promoted a Buy Local campaign through its Holiday Festival. Historic Downtown Providence’s local merchants were open for business throughout the day during the Holiday Festival to give tour goers an opportunity to get some early holiday shopping in. Many businesses had musicians in their stores to entertain the crowds. For more information on local businesses, visit Shop Downcity or Providence Downtown.
